I cannot find the street name that I am looking for, even under full postcode search ? |
It may not actually be listed. Road Angel Navigator incorporates maps from NAVTEQ, the acknowledged leader in maps for Satellite Navigation Systems. We do use the most current version of maps available, however sometimes you can find that new roads or roads within the last 18 months may be out of date if recent work has been carried out changing traffic islands or creating adjacent roads.
The whole process of NAVTEQ being updated by local councils and road agencies, to sending out a scout party to re-drive the local area, incorporate this into their mapping data and then for us to make it available to you the customer, can sometimes take from 6 months to 18 months depending on how early NAVTEQ have been notified of road changes.
As an example, Road Angel Navigator was one of the first systems to include the UK's M6 Toll road where other Satellite Navigation Systems still do not support this major road in the UK.
If you do notice a road that is not in the maps or an error with the information, you can report this directly to NAVTEQ via their website; www.navteq.com
This will allow NAVTEQ to investigate and where necessary, revisit the location and survey it again for any changes. Once this has been properly surveyed, NAVTEQ will make it available to us in the next map update.
Postcodes for areas that are not mapped are updated far quicker than the maps themselves, in most instances you can navigate to the location quite accurately by selecting <Postcode Center> |
How often are the maps updated, can I buy updated maps and how will I know when they are available? |
NAVTEQ release updated versions of their maps approximately every 12 months. At the moment, Road Angel Navigator is using the latest release from NAVTEQ and as such do not have a release date for the next update. Once a new release is available, existing Road Angel Navigator customers will be able to purchase an update directly from us. Newly manufactured products will automatically come preloaded with the latest release available. Costs of map upgrades have yet to be released. Once a new release is available, we will publish a new address and/or postcode on our website that can be entered into your Navigator. If the address and/or Postcode cannot be located then your device is running a previous version.

Why does the 2D map not scroll in the same way as the 3D map? |
If you are negotiating a roundabout or a series of junctions, it can become very difficult to ascertain your position in 2D mode if the map was to continually update the same way as in 3D mode.
When attempting to locate a destination using only the Postcode it will only let me enter in 5 digits. For example, I am trying to navigate to NN12 8UP and can only enter NN12 8
To use the UK's 7 digit postcodes, please make sure you enter the postcode in the POSTCODE button and not the ADDRESS button as this will default to UK 5 digit postcodes.

The route that the Road Angel Navigator has given me is wrong as I know a much better route. |
Sometimes Road Angel Navigator may choose a different route to the one that you have chosen. This may take you a longer route on a motorway, or perhaps a more long winded route through minor roads.
Please bear in mind that in most cases you may have better local knowledge compared to the Road Angel Navigator, and may know that a particular road is heavily congested at a particular time of the day, e.g. rush hour. Road Angel Navigator although it contains a lot of highly technical routing information will not have this local knowledge, so this is why sometimes Road Angel Navigator may take you a different route to the one you would have driven.
If you continue to drive then Road Angel Navigator will re-route you and hopefully select the road in which you are driving. If not, press the DETOUR button and this will create a new route for you.
Road Angel Navigator's aim is to get you from A to Z in the best possible route, and will always do so, but sometimes local knowledge just cannot be beaten. |
The route that the Road Angel Navigator is wrong, I know a much Quicker / Shorter route. |
Sometimes Road Angel Navigator may take you a route that isn't quite the shortest or quite the quickest. The reason behind this is that Road Angel Navigator contains some very sophisticated routing algorithms. To enable us to route properly we have to weigh certain types of roads and add penalties to other types. This can sometimes affect the quickest or shortest routes and provide a slightly longer journey than anticipated.
The route that the Road Angel Navigator has chosen for me takes me down a road or roads that I do not wish to travel. How can I avoid it without having to leave the route just before I get to this particular road? |
Once you have entered a route in Driving mode and have selected Start Driving, you can then view the route in text form using the Itinerary button.
You can then scroll down the route, select the road you wish it to avoid.

Then press the Red Triangle and select Avoid Road. The road will be excluded and the Navigator will find an alternative route.

Does the Road Angel Navigator contain maps of Ireland on the standard UK database? |
Road Angel Navigator incorporates maps supplied by NAVTEQ, who also supply maps to the majority of factory fitted Satellite Navigation systems in Europe.
Each release of Road Angel Navigator contains the most up to date maps available at that time. NAVTEQ's policy is to 'drive every road', and are continually expanding and updating their European Coverage. Currently certain parts of Europe have less than 100% map coverage.
In the case of Ireland, Road Angel Navigator contains street level data for the majority of Ireland this includes both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey. To enter a destination in the Republic of Ireland, enter EI when prompted to Enter Country.

I want to hardwire Road Angel Navigator into my vehicle. |
IMPORTANT: Road Angel Navigator is a 5 Volt product, do NOT attempt remove the power plug on the end of the cable and wire directly into a 12 or 24 Volt supply or . To hardwire the Navigator you will need to purchase an ‘Accessory socket’ (shown below) from an electrical supplier and hard wire this into the vehicle’s electrical system, this can be done discreetly. We recommend then using the straight power cable supplied which plugs directly into the accessory socket.

The green standby light on the top right of the fascia is lit but there is nothing on the screen of the Navigator. |
This happens if the battery in the unit is very low. Charge the unit up in the cradle or via the PC. |
The sound is very quite on the unit, even when using the cradle. |
There is a speaker built into the cradle that amplifies the sound from the Navigator. The cradle must be powered (blue light showing in the bottom left hand side) for the speaker to work.
Road Angel Navigator is in the cradle and the blue light in the bottom right is lit, yet there is no display on the screen and the green standby light on the top right of the fascia is not lit. |
There is an On / Off switch on the base of the unit, ensure that it is moved to the right to switch the unit on.
Road Angel Navigator is not remembering my favourite locations. |
If the SD card is locked the information cannot be saved. Switch off the Navigator using the switch on the base and remove the SD card from the side of the unit. There is a small sliding switch on the side of the card, ensure that it is in the up position towards the large black arrow.

Can I use Road Angel Navigator just to alert me to Fixed Safety Cameras etc, and not have it trying to route me to a destination? |
Yes, when you are in the ‘Going To…’ menu, ensure that there is no destination entered, then select ‘Start Driving’. If you have any destinations listed you will need to delete them. Tap on any of the entries in the list and then select ‘Delete All’. Select OK when prompted and then select ‘Start Driving’.

The Points of Interest (POIs) are not always shown on the map. |
The Points of Interest are only displayed on the map when you are stationary.
I cannot enter a Junction as my destination, for example M1 Junction 5 when using the Junction button on "Select Stop" |
The term ‘Junction’ refers to a location where two roads intersect, not the Junction of a Motorway. When you enter the first street location, you are then given a list of all the streets that run off it. For example, Little London & Stocks Hill, Silverstone.

When I am connecting Road Angel Navigator to the PC, the Active-Sync software says it needs to be in the cradle. |
Road Angel Navigator is based on a Windows CE platform that was designed for use with PDAs or Hand-held computers. In most cases these sorts of devices come with a desktop cradle to connect the device to the PC, hence the reference to a cradle. Road Angel Navigator does not require the use of the in-car cradle when connected to the PC, the USB cable plugs directly into the side of the device.
